Churches with Daycares

This year we have a new daycare Director. I've already been told by her that her staff has to been in each classroom with the daycare kids at all times. We've never done that. My teachers are all church members and they are never alone with any of the kids. We have 130 kids in our VBS and only about 20% are daycare, so there isn't enough daycare workers to filter in each classroom. Also I've used the daycare teachers as teachers for the younger aged kids. So I'm sort of nervous going to this new daycare director and what the laws are about all this. We except federal assistant for low-income families and have been told that there are limitations on what we can and can't do. I'm just curious if anyone has to deal with this. It would be nice to know what other churches do, before I go to this lady. She's not a church member and doesn't know anything about VBS.

  • my name is lisa, im from iowa. i have a homedaycare-7years now, church teacher 13 years. in iowa-whenever i do take the kids on a trip or special activities, i know that i have to be or my assistant has to be there or there are issues w/insurance. i have signed waivers by parents each year though that opts me out of responsibility for swimming pools and school age activites that i do not attend. pos that might be an option if that is why she is stating they need a teacher in each room?? i havent come across the issue as a teacher-i know as a rule unless the church has a back ground check they cannot be in a leadership role (in your case since it is a center type they should have active record checks on all employees and volunteers available to you). as far as spreading them out-the ones at most potential risk would be the younger ones so i would let them be of assistance in those rooms/areas and pos have them help w/passing stuff out, getting needed items and clean up where they arent maybe really teaching but helping?? you can check for laws w/department of human services for laws and if you have a local refferal agency for daycares. i would make sure the rules for all involved are met and if they cannot be is it worth loosing assistance to accomodate the 20%? we dont have federal assistance that i know of that we sue for vbs and i have never directed one so as far as being in charge i dont envy you having to face this but i wish you peace of mind and the words you need will come-good luck!! lisa
